Agnes Varda and Mathieu Demy in person! I first saw this film when it played at LACMA in late 2013. Floored by the picture, I wrote the following upon arriving home: "Life's cruel irony (at least one) is that young ones yearn for maturity, for independence, and old ones mourn their lost youth, to cling to its most seductive beauty and verve. 40-year-old Mary Jane (Jane Birkin) and 14-year-old Julien (Mathieu Demy) find each other at this most curious and desirous of intersections. As unsettling as it is masterful, Varda's film watches the taboo romance innocently bloom, develop, and come crashing down in the eyes of anyone - everyone! - but Mary Jane and Julien. The implications are larger than Julien can possibly understand, although Mary Jane should be perfectly aware. In the end, she is left hurt and hanging in the balance, unreconciled about her genuine affection for the boy - a kind of physicalized remembrance of her youth - although Julien's closing sentiments, the film's final salute, reveals he cannot face reality. Instead, replete with cigarette and leather jacket, he must posture in order to protect himself from the horrible truth." - SBP
