  • LACMA Bing Theater 5905 Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles, CA, 90036 (map)

An undisputed martial arts masterpiece and one of the most influential titles in the Shaw Brothers catalogue, director / choreographer Lau Kar-leung's THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN is the story of a lone rebellion fighter (Gordon Liu) who, bested and bloodied by Manchu government enforcers, seeks refuge at a nearby Shaolin temple. The monks therein are initially distrustful of a stranger among their ranks, but the abbot decrees that he may stay. After his first year with the monks, his training begins. Fueled by a thirst for vengeance, he advances through the ranks and excels at his lessons, putting other students to shame. He would later be known as San Te (or San De), a legendary martial artist often credited with the dissemination of "shaolin style" martial arts to the common people, empowering them with the ability to defend themselves and their loved ones.

RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan will appear in person to discuss the film, Wu-Tang's 1993 debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and how martial arts films and philosophy have shaped his life and career. This will be the first in a series of three classic Hong Kong movies presented at LACMA. The two additional titles have yet to be announced. Any predictions? - SBP
