Free Sneak: LAND HO! (Katz)

  • The Cinefamily 611 N Fairfax Ave Los Angeles, CA, 90036 (map)

I have not yet seen LAND HO!, which is apparently a kind of road movie, but I have seen all of Aaron Katz's previous narrative features. His first two, DANCE PARTY USA (2006) and QUIET CITY (2007), were emblazoned with the Mumblecore moniker, a self-deprecating truism coined by filmmakers yet employed by journalists to quite succinctly describe low-budget, American independent film. The problem with Mumblecore (as a term) is that it frightens some viewers from giving often good or great films an honest chance. Katz's most recent, COLD WEATHER, brilliantly transcended the by-then Oblomovian Mumblecore label in allowing its characters to quite literally find themselves acting out what for them was previously only a mere dream or fantasy - so, too, Katz transforms himself as filmmaker (and the film) into more than Mumblecore: an edge-of-your-seat detective flick. - SBP
