Archive Treasures: SPECTER OF THE ROSE

  • The Billy Wilder @ Hammer Museum 10899 Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles, CA, 90024

You might not instinctively think that ballet and noir make for a sensible combination (okay, I guess Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN is a more modern example - if horror in lieu of noir), but add multi-hyphenate Ben Hecht to the mix as writer-director-producer and you have a recklessly melodramatic and wonderfully delightful anti-Hollywood feature from the mid-40s. UCLA's grad student film society, The Crank, showed this film in the Spring of 2011 (the very same archive print, too) and my mind still drifts to some of the film's snappy dialogue and the bold, if sometimes saccharine, execution of scenes. Hecht is going with his gut at every opportunity. So sincerely weird and sincerely good. - SBP
