A double dose of late period Welles - his fierce cinematic genius no doubt on display, but that regretfully went unrecognized in its time. I haven't yet seen CHIMES (35mm screenings are all too terribly rare due to complicated rights issues), but F FOR FAKE is a damned masterpiece. I wrote about Welles a few weeks ago in the Blog section of the site, so it is already quite clear that the latter film in the double feature is my favorite film in Welles' filmography, but my bias aside, it is really something. It is one of the first steps forward in a form now known as the 'video essay,' that curious intersection non-fiction and film - cinema with a literary bent. The film is playful, filled with jokes, and confronts its audience with Welles' love of language, which is the true source of all his magic. You won't regret buying a ticket for this.  - SBP
