Heavy Midnites: VIDEODROME

  • The Cinefamily 611 N Fairfax Ave Los Angeles, CA, 90036

When I was seventeen, I saw VIDEODROME for the first time not knowing that what I was about to see would profoundly alter my idea of what cinema could be (forward-thinking, terrestrial sci-fi technophobia) where it could go (in terms of the imagination), and the heights it could achieve as simultaneous pulp and art. It wasn't my first David Cronenberg film - I had seen THE FLY a few years earlier, before I really knew who David Cronenberg was, and loved it. I haven't seen VIDEODROME since that time, or thereabouts, but I haven't needed to - this is the sort of film that sticks with you, that burns into your memory like Debbie Harry's cigarette, that creates new flesh in the brain. This film will give you Samurai Dreams. Whether you haven't seen it yet or if you've seen it 1,000 times, see it on 35mm at Cinefamily. - SBP
