I'm not 100% certain that Ryan Trecartin is still #relevant, but I don't much care. His work has always been equally baffling and provocative to me and I am eager to see more of it (especially in a theatrical or museum context). Until now, my experience with Trecartin has been almost exclusively via YouTube or Vimeo - which is to say, a private, home-viewing experience. LACMA's event page says that the program includes an introduction by Trecartin, but fails to clarify whether he will appear in person. Is this a video introduction, an extension of the "four movies" being shown, or am I just overthinking this, academia-style?
Whatever ends up happening and whoever is (or isn't) present on the day of the show, this one comes highly recommended. Sometimes you just need to expose yourself to something utterly unlike anything else - and that assuredly conveys Trecartin's pastiche definition of cinema. - SBP
